Recycling and Drinking Water in my Community

Introduction:

In communities in Trinidad, many people rely on public water supplies for treated and safe water. The Water and Sewage Authority (WASA) takes care of these needs. The drinking water is treated like it is back home in a water treatment plant, which makes it safe to drink. I don't worry about getting sick from the water!

The trash here is also collected on a regular basis by a trash collector like it is at home. People bag up their trash and leave it outside to be collected. The only difference is that people here don't recycle. This is very hard for me, because I am an active recycler at home! I take my plastic bottles to campus so I can recycle them there. It makes me sad because my island has a high rate of plastic use at 200,000 tons per year.

What community need did I learn about?:

I learned about safe drinking water and trash collecting.

Why does the community have this need?:

Everyone should have access to clean drinking water! Imagine if you had to drink bottled water all the time or boil your water before you could drink it. It would make staying hydrated, cooking and washing produce hard. It is important to make sure the water you're using is safe to drink, because you can get sick from bad water.
