Travel News

How far did I travel this week?:

Because this was my first full week in the town of Trier, most of my travelling was just walking around the town. Here I usually walk around 4-5 miles a day, but on days where I do a lot of exploring I’ll sometimes end up walking 10 or more miles!

How far have I traveled on this journey so far?:

Trier is exactly 3,932 miles away from my hometown of State College, Pennsylvania. I took a plane from State College to Frankfurt, then took a train for about 3 hours from Frankfurt to Trier!

How did I get around this week?:

I got around mostly by walking, because the town is relatively small. I also have made lots of discoveries just by walking! For example, I was trying to find a bakery that a friend recommended, but on my way there I happened upon the ruins of a Roman bath house from about 1900 years ago! But when I’m not walking, I travel by bus (especially when the weather is too rainy).

What was the most interesting place I visited this week?:

2000 years ago, the city of Trier was controlled by the Roman Empire. Because of this, there are still many Roman ruins scattered throughout town. Probably the most famous Roman landmark is called Porta Nigra, which is Latin for “Black Gate.” It’s right in the center of town, so I pass it every day on my way to work.
