The main language is Chinese, and many people also speak Taiwanese. In school, students must study English, so a lot of Taiwanese people speak English as well. Older people in Taiwan sometimes speak Japanese because Taiwan was ruled by Japan from 1895-1945. Finally, there are Indigenous languages. These languages are less common but are an important part of Taiwan's culture.
Taiwan uses the New Taiwan dollar (NTD or NT). They come in 100NT, 500NT and 1000NT bills. 100NT is about $3, and 1000NT is about $30. There are also coins: 1NT, 5NT, 10NT and 50NT. Coins are actually very useful here! Many snacks at the night market cost less than 100NT, so you can spend your coins there!
In Chinese, we use 块 (kuài), which is a measure word for money, and 钱 (qián). So if my breakfast costs 120NTD, the shopkeeper would say "一百二十块钱." How would the shopkeeper say 35NTD?
A bottle of water costs between 30NT and 50NT. If 100NTD is about $3, how much is that in USD?
