Our News

What main languages are spoken here?:

The main language spoken here is Slovak. The Slovak language is very different from English, making it harder to learn as someone whose first language is English. I was just given a book to help me learn this new language, so I am excited to practice. There are very few people in my town who speak English, so I have to try to practice words that will help me better understand my neighbors.

What type of money is used here?:

In Slovakia, like most European countries, they use the Euro to pay for things. In this currency, there are bills and coins, as we have in the United States. However, they are in different values. For example, if you are paying one or two Euros, you would pay with a coin, instead of a paper bill like the Dollar. Other countries around me use a different currency. When I go to the Czech Republic, they use the Czech Koruna, so I must have these bills and coins to pay. I have found that it is important not to mix up the coins, since they look very similar to each other.

How much does a bottle of water cost?:

A typical bottle of water costs around .50 Euros. Most people purchase large water bottles because they enjoy mineral water or flavored water. One thing I have noticed is that most people do not have a reusable water bottle. They carry around these large plastic water bottles and then recycle them instead.
