Food is one of the best ways to learn about a country’s culture. I had the opportunity to visit Albert Cuyp Market, a busy outdoor market in Amsterdam filled with traditional Dutch foods. Because the Netherlands is close to the sea, many Dutch foods include fresh fish, potatoes, bread and dairy products. The Dutch are especially famous for their cheeses, like Gouda. Many traditional meals are warm and filling because, in the past, people needed hearty food to get through the cold and rainy weather. Today, you can find these foods at markets, supermarkets and Dutch bakeries. While visiting Albert Cuyp Market, I tried a stroopwafel for the first time and it did not disappoint!
I tried a stroopwafel, which is a popular Dutch dessert. It is made of two thin waffle cookies with a layer of gooey caramel syrup in the middle.
When I took my first bite, I was amazed. The warm, gooey caramel mixed with the sweet, soft waffle was out of this world! Even though I don’t have a huge sweet tooth, I loved it so much that I had to save some for later. It was just that good.
