Then they are sliced in half and filled with a warm caramel syrup called “stroop.” Sometimes they are placed on top of a hot cup of tea to make the caramel even softer.

Is this food connected to the local environment? How?:

Stroopwafels were first made in the Netherlands hundreds of years ago in the Dutch city of Gouda. Yes, the same city famous for Gouda cheese! Stroopwafels are believed to be invented as a way to use up leftover scraps of dough. Instead of wasting ingredients, they would simply press the remaining dough into those thin waffles. It started as a snack for working class families because it was affordable, filling and if I might add, very delicious! Stroopwafels are one of the country's most famous treats!
