The World Around Me

Because it is always so hot, the smog, or pollution from cars that gets caught in the air we breathe, does not have a way of filtering itself out. The smog gets caught around the buildings in Bangkok, making a dark cloud settle over the city which is dangerous to breathe in. Most people wear masks when the news tells people that pollution will be extremely bad. At Rangsit University, we've had canceled class because the air pollution was so bad.

What parts of this environment help people to live here?:

The environment is affected by many factors. Cars emitting petrol gasoline fumes and unclean gases add up in the atmosphere and make it warmer for everyone. The main thing to understand is that Thailand can use our help. When classes were canceled because of air pollution, some students went to Bangkok, despite the health risks. When they came back, they showed us videos of firefighters pouring water out into the street to combat air pollution. How would that help? For some, this is the only way that they see how to fight air pollution. Since Thailand does not get much rain to move the pollution away from the city, they thought that they could help. But pouring water does not help the situation. More has to be done.

What challenges do people face living in this environment?:

People face health problems from the environment. Some students were told not to brush their teeth with the tap water in the bathroom. Others were told not to drink water with ice from restaurants. The water here is not clean enough to drink from the tap like at home. At school, there are always giant water containers being replaced and carried out to trucks to fill up again acting as portable water fountains.
