Bartering by Boat

Introduction:

Can Tho is always bustling with motorbikes. There is another type of transportation in this part of Vietnam that is a hidden gem. The city is in a delta, which is the mouth of a river, therefore water is a huge part of life in this region. Transportation is no exception!

How do people get around?:

In day to day life, most people in Can Tho get around on their motorbikes. However, the unique boats in Can Tho are a very important aspect of transportation in this city that goes unnoticed if you don’t know where to look! Boats along the river are vital to the economy in the Mekong Delta, as merchants travel up and down the rivers selling their goods so other people can sell them in local markets and restaurants. These river sailors will dock in a city like Can Tho until all of their supply is gone, even if it takes many days. Some boats are small, and others are relatively big, but you'd never see a massive cruise ship coming through these waters!

How did I feel when I tried this way of getting around?:

I don’t have my own little boat to explore in, but I’ve been lucky enough to be invited on a couple tours of the floating markets. The intricate floating market has different webs of canals.
