Getting Scary in Vietnam

Introduction:

It turns out that kids in all kinds of places like to celebrate Halloween! In Vietnam, children enjoy making their own masks and decorating them with a bunch of different colors. From superheroes and skulls, to owls and foxes, these kids get creative with their costumes. They’ll wear them next week for a big Halloween party where they’ll eat lots of candy. Sounds familiar, doesn’t it?

What tradition did I learn about?:

I had such a great time experiencing how Vietnamese kids prepare for Halloween. We used crayons to decorate masks and made scary spider webs out of popsicle sticks and string. The kids also colored books with Jack O’Lanterns, ghosts, witches, spiders and other monsters that they’ll hang on the walls during the party. They are so excited for the big day!

Why does the community have this tradition?:

Celebrating Halloween has become increasingly popular in Vietnam as more people from other countries have moved here and started to share their traditions. The Mid-Autumn festival is a huge event in late September or early October in Vietnam. People are eager to continue celebrating the fall season with Halloween a few weeks later. It’s not necessarily a major holiday here, but the kids seem to have a ton of fun with it!
