Bus or Taxi? Getting Around in Jamaica

Introduction:

Every day is an adventure in Jamaica. How do I get to my school or the library or to the store? That can be an adventure, too.

If you do not have a car, you take the bus or a taxi. There are two types of buses and two types of taxis. For each category of transportation, there is a "normal" option and an "adventurous" option. The normal buses are just like in NYC. They are big, comfortable and have air-conditioning. They are bright yellow, so you can always see them. Sometimes they get crowded, like in NYC. This only happens at the end of the day.

The normal taxis are different from NYC cabs. They are not yellow. You cannot go outside to catch one. You must telephone to get one. They are regular cars. No signs. I sit in the front seat with the driver. Did you know in Jamaica the steering wheel is on the other side of the car? They drive on the other side of the street, too.

If you need to get somewhere and are looking for an adventure, there are great options, too. The buses are called coaster buses. They are small. They look like a big van. The person who helps the driver is a conductor. The conductor always puts too many people on the bus. The driver drives like he is in a car race! You must hold on for your life!

The taxis, or route taxis, are a little better. Some of the cars are old. I don't know how some drive at all!
