What main languages are spoken here?:

Jamaica has two main languages: English and Patois. Language is a complicated issue sometimes. Some people will say that Jamaican English or Patois is not the proper way of speaking, but this is not the case at all! They are very distinct languages that express the color, the diversity and the beauty of the culture.

For many people, Patois it is their first language. There is a movement to make Patois the official language of the island. This movement began shortly after Jamaica became independent from Britain in 1962. Patois is a beautiful language. Largely English with West African influence, the language changes slightly from parish to parish.

My favorite Patois expression is: Ah de de, which means "over there."
