Island of Trains

Introduction:

Wherever you go, transportation is a vital part of life. It can either make roaming the country and seeing dozens of sights an easy and fun trip, or a longer and more intense journey. Many say that the destination isn’t as important as how you get there. For me, I have had the opportunity to use several different transportation methods. I have taken a taxi, bus, train, plane and boat, driven myself, walked, biked and rode a horse.

What is transportation like in your town?

How do people get around?:

Trains are the main mode of transportation for Japanese people throughout the country. Because of the large number of people using the trains in Japan, 46 of the world's 50 busiest stations are in this country. Some newspapers have said that over seven billion people ride the trains in Japan every year. In Tokyo alone, it is estimated that 20 million people ride the trains every day! The largest populated city in America is Los Angeles with just under 19 million people.

How did I feel when I tried this way of getting around?:

I had taken my local bus to get to my high school for about a year and I had taken the bus at my college a few times, but trains and buses aren’t common in Washington State. I had read a lot about Japan’s trains and was excited to ride them.
