Island of Trains

I walk from my dorm to the grocery store every week as well as to the bank to pay bills. The third and most common form of transportation in Japan is the train system.

Punctuality is key for Japan's trains as so much of the population depends on it in order to get to work on time. If a train is five or more minutes late at the start of the day (during rush hour), station attendants will hand out "certificates of train delay" to be shown to schools or bosses. If you are late because of your own poor planning, bosses and schools are very strict. However, if you are late because of a train delay, nearly everyone will understand and say shoganai (it can’t be helped). This reliance on the punctuality of trains is deeply important to the Japanese people as trains are their number one form of transportation.
