Zooming through the City by Bus

Introduction:

If you want to walk, you can walk through Wellington City center (they call it CBD - central business district) in about an hour. However, most people commute to the CBD on buses. New Zealanders have a unique bus culture relative to what I am used to back home!  Let me explain further below.

How do people get around?:

The bus system is very convenient, so many people choose to get around the city that way. People get a bus pass called a"Snapper Card" to swipe on and off and say "thank you driver!" every time they step off the bus. The bus fares are split into three zones for different pricing when you go through single or multiple zones. The Snapper Cards also give students a 25% discount for travelling on the bus. If you are using cash, however, its usually more expensive to ride the bus system than if you are using the Snapper Cards system.   In addition to the bus line system, many people walk or drive cars, as you might expect.  There is also an airport that hosts domestic and international flights.
