Travel News

How far did I travel this week?:

This weekend I traveled to Chiang Mai, a big city in northern Thailand. It's an hour-long plane flight away, covering about 300 miles.

How far have I traveled on this journey so far?:

I've been to a few different cities within Thailand since moving to Khon Kaen, from Ubolratana to Bangkok to Chiang Mai. I have yet to leave the country, but my plan is to travel to Cambodia and Vietnam over winter break. I'll keep you updated!

How did I get around this week?:

One new form of transportation for me was the red truck. Khon Kaen has songtaews, which follow the routes that are assigned to them. Instead of using songtaews, Chiang Mai uses red trucks. Red trucks are pickup trucks with roofs and benches, like songtaews, but they go wherever you tell them to go, just like taxis. When I needed to go to the airport, I waved one down from the sidewalk and told the driver where I needed to go. "Songroi baht," he said, which means "two hundred baht." I agreed to his price, hopped in the back and was driven straight to my destination!

What was the most interesting place I visited this week?:

The most interesting place was Doi Suthep, a temple sitting atop the highest mountain in Chiang Mai.
