Our News

What main languages are spoken here?:

Khon Kaen University attracts a number of international students, bringing an exciting multi-cultural feeling to the campus. This that means I hear German students speaking German, Italian students speaking Italian and Chinese students speaking Chinese, among others.

What type of money is used here?:

Different landmarks are featured on certain baht coins. Wat Doi Suthep (pronounced "wat doy sootep"), the temple I saw in Chiang Mai, is featured on the half-baht coin! Have you ever seen any of the landmarks pictured on American money?

How much does a bottle of water cost?:

A small water bottle costs about seven baht. When I buy things like water bottles in Seattle, I use a debit card. In Thailand, cash, rather than debit and credit cards, is used for nearly every purchase so I always have a pocket full of coins and bills to pay for food and water.

What was the best meal this week?:

After hiking up the mountain called Doi Suthep, I scarfed down a plate of grapao gai, (pronounced "krapao guy"), which is chicken stir-fried with sweet basil and chili peppers atop a plate of white rice.

What music did I listen to this week?:

I was introduced to a musical instrument called a khene (pronounced "ken").
