I was a bit wary to try it at first, but the first bite was really good. It has a unique savory taste that sometimes I even crave.
I LOVE French fries, so I was looking forward to tasting fries in a restaurant across Amsterdam. Fabet, by far, has grown to have a special place in my heart, even with it being so touristy. I love the crispiness of their fries, and the great flavor of their toppings.
Making a Kroketten from scratch is more complicated than I imagined--the simple appearance for sure fooled me. The Dutch kroket's preparation is a multi-stage process. First, a thick ragù is cooked and chilled. This chilled filling is then shaped, coated in flour, egg, and breadcrumbs, and deep-fried until golden brown. However, since Kroketten is a very popular dish, you can often find prepared frozen versions that you can pop in the air fryer.
As for the Dutch fries, they are usually fried right in front of you and then topped with whatever you may like, from various types of mayonnaise to ketchup to peanut sauce to curry!
Kroketten is deeply connected to Dutch culture. It first appeared in the 1830s and was even considered an elegant side dish. Over time, this snack has become a staple in Dutch culture.
Although the Netherlands' neighboring country, Belgium, is the most famous for its frites. Amsterdam is filled with fries shops all over the city, shops that are known for their great toppings and delicious frites.
