A Sleepy Tree Climbing Koala in the Australian Forest

I had hoped to see koalas during my time in Australia, but I never expected one to appear right in front of me while hiking in the rainforest. I was so excited that I stood there in silence, just watching and observing every behavior. It was fascinating to see it behaving naturally instead of seeing one in a photo, video, or behind glass. It reminded me that nature is full of surprises, and sometimes the best discoveries happen when we slow down, stay quiet, and pay attention to our surroundings.

Where does it live?:

Koalas live in eastern Australia in eucalyptus forests, woodlands, and even some rainforests! I spotted one while hiking through the lush rainforest of Lamington National Park in Queensland. Koalas can live in different environments as long as they have the right trees for food and shelter. They depend on certain eucalyptus trees, also called gum trees, for their leafy meals and places to rest. Protecting these trees helps koalas survive!

How does it use its environment to survive?:

A koala's tree is like its own little home! Its strong arms, gripping paws, and sharp claws help it climb and hold on to branches. Up in the trees, it can rest away from many dangers on the ground. Koalas are very picky eaters. They mainly eat leaves from certain eucalyptus trees, called gum trees. These leaves contain chemicals that would make many other animals sick, but koalas have a special digestive system that helps them handle them! The leaves don't give koalas much energy, so they spend lots of time resting to save energy. Koalas also get much of the water they need from the leaves they eat. When I watched my koala, I saw it eating while sitting in its tree.
