Square Up!

Introduction:

With a population of 18 million people, the metropolis of Seoul offers many different ways to get from Point A to Point B. Popular transportation methods include the metro, the bus and cars. For shorter distances, most people either walk or use a bike. Each method of getting around is unique and has its positive and negative aspects.

How do people get around?:

A popular way to get around the city is by the metro. The metro train system is so large,  but it goes all around Seoul at a cheap rate, ₩1,250  ($1) to ₩2,000 ($1.60) depending on the distance traveled. People typically rush to the metro during peak hours such as at lunchtime, when the stores close, and when the last train around midnight comes; if you miss that train, you have to take a taxi or wait until the first train at 5:30 am!

Other people like to use the bus system. While it is less busy than the metro, the bus system can still be full due to how close the stops are. The bus drivers do not wait for you to sit down before they go; they do have a schedule to keep. The bus stops themselves even have screens that tell you how long until the next bus comes! The bus tickets are cheaper around ₩900 (75 cents), but you will have to transfer more if you want to go outside of your -dong, or neighborhood.

If you are brave enough, you can take a taxi, or drive yourself.
