To get to Malawi, I had to take four flights. I was traveling for 36 hours, which is one and a half days. By the time I reached Malawi, I was very tired! I got picked up by a driver from UNC Project, which is where I am going to be working. He was very nice and helped me get the local money and set up my phone so I could make local calls. On the ride home, we saw people selling grilled mice on the side of the road. The driver asked if I wanted to taste any! I really did not want to eat a mouse, but I did not want to offend him in case he really likes grilled mice. I did not know what to say. Then he told me he was joking! He has never tried a mouse himself.

This was a great introduction because I learned that Malawians are very funny. I also learned that they like to tease each other, just like you probably like to tease your friends. Malawi is called the "Warm Heart of Africa" because the people are so friendly.

I am staying at a “guest house” owned by UNC Project. There are several houses close together that can hold a lot of people. I have met seven friends staying here who will be in Malawi for the whole year. Plus, there are a lot of other friends who are only here for two weeks or for one month. I really like meeting new people often and hearing about why they are in Malawi.
