What main languages are spoken here?:

Brazil's main language is Portuguese, but you can find people who speak English and Spanish, too. Many people here in southern Brazil have Italian heritage, so there is even a language here that is a mixture of Italian and Portuguese.

What type of money is used here?:

Brazilian currency is called the real. There are 5, 10, 25 and 50-cent coins, and 2, 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100 reais bills.

How much does a bottle of water cost?:

A bottle of water costs about 1.5 reais, which is less than $.50. Brazil has many rivers, so water is easy to get. At my house, I usually drink water from the tap.

What was the best meal this week?:

The best meal I ate this week was the traditional feijão (beans) and rice that my host mom made for lunch. In Brazil, lunch is the biggest, most important meal of the day. Many people even leave work for an hour or two to eat a big, relaxing lunch with their families at home.

What music did I listen to this week?:

One new type of music I heard this week was sertanejo, a kind of music from Brazil's countryside. My students told me on Monday that they enjoyed this type of music. Usually, two people sing in harmony with guitars and some drums.
