Transportation in Quito, Ecuador

Introduction:

Quito, the capital of Ecuador, sits on an alititude of 2,850 meters and has more than 1.5 million people. With beautiful historic churches, a preserved historic district, and beautiful green spaces, people need reliable transportation. People get around by different ways, such as cars, buses, trolleys, taxis and on foot.

How do people get around?:

The two main ways people get around are by car or bus. My host family has a really old Toyota Land Cruiser that gets them everywhere they need to go! My host mom turns it on in the mornings before taking her daughter to school to make sure it's warm before driving. I really love riding in their car because it can get us up tall hills, cobblestone roads and muddy paths without a problem!

People also get around by bus. It costs 30 cents to ride the bus in my town and 25 cents to ride in Quito. It’s cheaper to ride in Quito because the bus route is typically shorter than in the valley where I live. Sometimes there aren’t clearly marked bus stop signs and you need to ask people where to catch the bus.

There isn't just one type of corporation that runs the bus system, either. They are many! To name a few, we have the Vingala, Marco Polo, Los Chillos and Capelo. By contrast, all buses and trains in New York City operate under one organization, the MTA.
