Travel News

How did I get around this week?:

I have gotten around on foot, on bike, in taxis and on buses this week. In my town, I never take a bus or taxi, always getting from point A to point B walking or biking. However, when traveling to different places, I take buses. And lastly, in Bogotá, I use the public bus system as well as taxis.

What was the most interesting place I visited this week?:

I think the most interesting place I visited this week was the páramo ecosystem between Bogotá and Choachí. Páramos only exist in Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador and Peru because these countries have areas with high altitudes that are on the equator. Páramos are found from 10,000 feet to 16,400 feet altitude. Anywhere that high in the USA can have snow, even in summertime. But here in Colombia, most aren’t snowy; instead, they have a strange unique plant called the frailejon (fry-le-hone). Frailejones are special plants that convert clouds to water and only live in cloudy páramo terrain. The páramo that I visited in Choachí had insane cliffs, hummingbirds and a condor, and was so wet that I was sinking into the ground.
