Games, KBBQ, and New Friends: A Peek into Korean Student Life

Introduction:

Yonsei Global is a cool student group at Yonsei University in South Korea. It helps students from all over the world feel welcome and have fun while studying in Korea! They plan awesome events, sporty activities, dance lessons, cooking classes, social gatherings, and trips so students can make new friends, learn about Korean life, and enjoy their time at school.

Yonsei Global started in 2003 and is helped by the Office of International Affairs (the part of the school that works with students from other countries). Thanks to Yonsei Global, students from everywhere can feel right at home!

A couple of weeks ago, I attended the Yonsei Global Membership Training (YG MT).

What tradition did I learn about?:

Membership Training, or MT (엠티) for short, is an overnight trip off-campus held by clubs at Korean universities. Korean university clubs plan these special weekend trips to help students bond and get to know each other better. It's kind of like going to camp, but just for a weekend. To me, this was kind of like a giant sleepover with games, yummy food, and lots of new friends.

To attend the MT, I had to pay the program fee, which was ₩100,000 ($70.50). However, this included a deposit of ₩30,000 ($21.15), which I got back after I attended the MT.
