Life in South Korea Through the Eyes of a Student

Introduction:

In one of my college classes at Yonsei University, Global Business Environment, I met someone amazing named Hye-yun. Our class only meets once a week for fifty minutes, and we mostly listen to lectures, so we didn't talk much at first. But when our professor put us into groups for a project, I got lucky—Hye-yun was on my team! We created a group chat using a popular Korean app called KakaoTalk, a messaging and texting platform. After one of our group meetings, I asked her if she'd be willing to share about her life in South Korea. She said yes!

Here's what I learned from our fun interview:

What is your full name?:

My name is Choi Hye-yun (최혜윤). In Korea, people say their last name first, so "Choi" is my family name, and "Hye-yun" is my first name. I am 22 years old and a third-year, or junior, at Yonsei University in Seoul, South Korea. I study political science and diplomacy, which means learning how countries work together. I also study business management, which is how I met Priscilla. The Korean college semester starts in February and ends in June, so I just finished my midterm exams!

Where do you live? What is your house like?:

South Korea is divided into nine provinces, similar to U.S. states. It also has seven big cities that are so large and important they're treated like provinces.
