Food has become an important part of my Pedal to Port expedition, and not just because riding a bicycle for several hours makes me hungry!
I began this journey in Casablanca, Morocco, and rode 229 miles north before crossing the Strait of Gibraltar by ferry into Spain. Along the way, I started noticing how much food could tell me about the places I was traveling through.
In Morocco, breakfast could cover an entire table with different breads, pancakes, fruit, olives, honey, eggs and juice. After crossing into Spain, I found a different food culture built around cafés, jamón, small plates called tapas and meal times that can be much later than I am used to.
Some of these foods are connected directly to what farmers grow and raise nearby. Others tell stories about history, family traditions and how people spend time together.
What could the food where you live tell a visitor about your community?
