I also tried olla de carne, a delicious, traditional soup. Food is a large part of family bonding in Costa Rica, and it was one of the first ways I was able to engage with my host family. I also had the opportunity to try freshly made cacao confites (candy) at the cacao finca I visited with my host sister. Costa Ricans are very generous and want to make sure everyone is well fed.
I listened to some Latin pop this week. Usually, when I do work, I listen to artists like Nsqk and Røz when I need a little motivation to keep working. Music is also a great way to practice my Spanish comprehension, so it offers multiple benefits.
This week, the most fun activity was going to my local liceo (high school) to learn about what types of projects I could help the teachers with. Some of the students I met were really engaging, and I received a tour of the school. I also learned about a project funded by a local nonprofit organization that teaches students about raising tilapia, so they showed me their four tanks and water filtration system used to care for them. I’m even more excited about the prospect of helping out my community at the youth level after that visit.
