One of the most amazing things about Belize is how diverse it is. There are many different cultures celebrated here including: Garifuna, Kriol, Spanish, Mestizo, Maya and Mennonite. Along with that, comes many different languages as well. The most widely spoken language here is English, then it would be Belizean Kriol (which is still an English-based language), then Spanish, then Garifuna, then K’iche’. That’s a lot to keep track of huh?
The money here is called the Belize dollar and each dollar is a different color. There are pink bills, purple bills, blue bills and green bills. On every dollar, there is a different Belizean animal. Some may have the tapir on them, a toucan, a jaguar or a howler monkey! As for coins, we refer to those as shillings in Belize.
A bottle of water costs $1.50 BZD, which would be the equivalent to $0.75 cents in America. We also have these things called “water bags” that are sold everywhere here. It’s just like a plastic water pouch you cut open with your teeth and squeeze out the water to drink. Those cost 0.50 shillings aka $0.25 cents in America.
