Traveler Bio

Hi there! Weh di gyan? (That means "what's going on?" in Belizean Kriol)

My name is Mia Barton and I’m 25 years old. I am originally from sunny Santa Barbara, California. I grew up just 10 minutes from the beach, so I practically lived on a surfboard… and barefoot!

After high school, I traded my surfboard for skis and headed to the University of Colorado Boulder. I double-majored in Leadership and Community Engagement and Sociology. To break that down, I studied human rights work around the world and how to enact meaningful change through community-based work.

I really wanted to put what I learned in college to the test, so I decided to join the Peace Corps. I'm currently serving as a volunteer in Belize, working in the Youth in Development sector. In my community, I partner with a local primary school where I teach life skills to young students and support after-school sports programs that encourage healthy, active lifestyles.

Belize may be a small country, but it's bursting with rich history, vibrant culture, and incredible people. I'm so excited to share more about this amazing place with you!

Peace Corps Volunteers like me live and work side by side with community members around the world, collaborating on locally prioritized projects, building relationships, exchanging cultures and knowledge, and helping transform lives for generations. Learn more by clicking here.
