The aldea (small community) in which I typically run is incredibly beautiful and green. I love starting my day with sunshine on my face.
I got to catch up with my old site-mate, Katie, who has completed her two year service but is extending her service for six more months in Guatemala. A site-mate is another volunteer who is either placed in the same town or city as your or pretty close by! Since her job is going to look slightly different for the next six months, she had to move closer to Xela, our nearest big city, and she now lives in a town called Salcajá. We spent the day together and made a delicious meal of pesto tortellini, stuffed with cheese, grilled chicken and salad, and we made a banana chocolate chip oatmeal bread for dessert. ¡Que rico (how delicious)! As a Peace Corps volunteer, it’s really important to take time away from your site occasionally to rest and recharge. Life in a small community can be very visible and socially engaging, and spending quality time with a good friend helps me show up refreshed and ready to reconnect.
