Transportation: Getting from A to B in Berlin

Introduction:

As you all know, Berlin is big. And a big city needs a big transportation system. Luckily, Berlin's public transportation system is vast. This can make getting around difficult, because there are so many options just to arrive at one place. However, the number of options also makes traveling much easier, as there are many ways to go somewhere. Whether you want to take an underground train or hop on a bike, there are endless ways to travel here. You may encounter some difficulty along the way, but you will definitely have fun.

How do people get around?:

Most Berliners (and tourists) use the public transportation system, which includes five main components: U-Bahn, S-Bahn, tram, bus and ferry. Each transportation mode is different, but they all connect in an extensive network that spreads across the city.

  • The U-Bahn is like a subway, with an underground train that travels at an average speed of 19.1 mph. That doesn't sound very fast, but it feels quite fun when you're zooming through a dark tunnel with no seatbelt.
  • The S-Bahn is exactly like the U-Bahn, except the trains travel high above ground on tracks that resemble bridges.
