May Day and Graffiti

Introduction:

Before 100 A.D., Germany existed as a region called Germania. Germania had many tribes and a strong culture. Traditions developed here over thousands of years! As you can imagine, modern Germany is a country rich in customs. For the four months I've lived here, I've had a lot of time to learn about and experience them. Berlin in particular loves annual festivals and activist marches, while the greater German area celebrates its vast history. Some traditions are religious, while others are just for fun.

You may have heard of the famous Oktoberfest, a festival in Bavarian Germany that attracts over six million people every year. You could probably guess it takes place in October, so I wasn't able to go this year. In this article I will focus on some of the events that I could attend and share my experiences with you!

What tradition did I learn about?:

One big tradition that I have encountered consists of the demonstrations in Berlin, in which thousands of people gather to express support or disapproval for one issue. Berlin is a city known for its (usually) peaceful protests and activism.
