The Famous German Greenhouse

Introduction:

I recently journeyed to Berlin's Botanical Garden, one of the most famous gardens in the world! It holds a massive collection of indoor and outdoor plants, ponds and places for scientific research. The Botanical Garden is huge and home to over 20,000 types of plants. This is made possible by the garden's beautiful greenhouses, created over 100 years ago by Adolf Engler. He wanted Berlin to have die Welt in einem Garten, or the world in a garden. And that's exactly what being here felt like!

What does this creature or plant look like?:

The garden has over 15 greenhouses, including one dedicated to cacti, appropriately called the Cacti House. These plants were definitely my favorite part of the garden. They all looked so different. Some cacti were tall, skinny and green. Others were short, stout and pink. Some were even squiggly, reminding me of a large, prickly caterpillar.

How did I feel when I saw it?:

I've never seen so many cacti in one place, since I'm from the Midwest, so these plants captivated me. The climate in Berlin is pretty cold and therefore not suited for much biodiversity, so it was awesome to see so many different kinds of plants in one place. It definitely made me want to travel to hotter places to see even more new species.
