Travel News

How far did I travel this week?:

Most places in central Aarhus are relatively close together, especially by bike. It takes me about 12 minutes to bike to my research lab at Aarhus University and about 15 minutes to get to my Danish language classes. One of my favorite things about living here is how easy it is to get around without a car!

How far have I traveled on this journey so far?:

One of the farthest places I've traveled during my time abroad is Luster, Norway. In October, Danish schools have a weeklong autumn break called efterårsferie, sometimes nicknamed kartoffelferie, or "potato holiday." Historically, children were given time off from school to help their families harvest potatoes. Today, the break is mostly used for vacations and spending time with family.

During this break, my friends and I traveled from Aarhus to Copenhagen by bus, took an overnight ferry from Copenhagen to Oslo, rode a train from Oslo to Bergen, and finally drove from Bergen to Luster. The journey was an adventure in itself, especially the train ride and drive through Norway's beautiful mountains and fjords. Fjords are long, narrow stretches of seawater surrounded by steep cliffs and mountains, carved by glaciers thousands of years ago. We spent our time hiking and enjoying the incredible scenery.
