What main languages are spoken here?:

The main language spoken in Aarhus is Danish, although almost everyone I've met also speaks English. Most Danes begin learning English in their first year of school (around six years old), so it's relatively easy for me to communicate with people here. However, some Danes are less confident speaking English, even if they understand it well.

In my dorm, my Danish roommates naturally speak Danish with one another, but will switch to English when I'm part of the conversation. A similar phenomenon occurs in my research lab, too. I've been taking Danish classes on Mondays and Wednesdays, so I try to practice whenever I can!

What type of money is used here?:

Denmark uses the Danish krone (DKK), rather than the euro used in many other European countries. One U.S. dollar is worth approximately 7 Danish kroner. Danish money comes in both coins and paper bills, but most people use credit cards or MobilePay, a popular Danish mobile payment app, similar to Venmo in the U.S.

How much does a bottle of water cost?:

A bottle of water typically costs around 20-30 DKK (about $3-4.50), plus a small additional fee, called pant. For a small plastic bottle, the fee is usually 1.50 DKK. When you return your empty bottle to a recycling machine at a supermarket, you get your pant money back.
