Come Celebrate Ramadan with Me!

Introduction:

All around the world, people are celebrating something called Ramadan! Ramadan is a time when people pray, think about kindness and spend time with their families. At the end, there is a big celebration called Eid. Come celebrate with me!

What tradition did I learn about?:

During Ramadan, many Muslims fast. This means that they do not as much as usual. They do not eat during the daytime. They eat early in the morning before the sun comes up, which is called Suhoor [suh-hor]. When the sun goes down, they eat again. That’s called Iftar [iff-tar]. They often start with dates and water! At the end of the month, people celebrate Eid [eed] with prayers, yummy food and family visits.

Why does the community have this tradition?:

Ramadan is a time to think about others and be kind. People try to help those in need and show love and care. Some people, like young children or people who are sick, do not have to fast.

Is this tradition connected to its environment? How?:

People celebrate Ramadan all over the world! In Kenya, especially near the coast, many people celebrate. You can see decorations and people getting ready for Eid!
