Nature News

However, some communities, such as mine, are trying to handle the situation either by scaring off the chuchos or capturing them and getting them vaccinated.

What was the coolest thing I saw in nature this week?:

To be honest, I didn’t recently see anything spectacular this week. Now I do love the nature in my community, and just walking in our vast mountains is always a treat and a wonderful experience, but this is my first logbook, and I really want to blow your mind. So… BOOM VOLCANO ERUPTION! That’s right, about a month ago, I got to stand two miles from the peak of an erupting volcano. Isn't that awesome?

Other Nature News from this week:

Fun fact: this is the first time it has rained for three consecutive days in my community in five months. Do you know what that means? CORN SEASON! In my community and in a lot of parts of Guatemala, families focus on growing corn. Corn, the primary produce of many of the native Mayan tribes, was grown long before the Spanish came to Guatemala. This culture is carried on by the people of Guatemala as they continue to grow tons of corn each year. The time to plant corn is right when the first few rains of the rainy season begin, and that means the time to plant is right now. Hooray, Corn Season!
