On Sunday I traveled 154 miles from Lima back to my site. Then I traveled 43 miles to the jungle and back. Since they’re built along the mountains, the two-lane roads wind precariously and can look down on some terrifying cliffs. Not only that, but during the rainy season, rockslides pose a very dangerous threat, sometimes jamming traffic for hours at a time while workers clear boulders off the road. Despite the risks, the views are always stunning on these drives, and fortunately, serious accidents are rare.
Not including trips I've made within Peru, I've traveled 3,758 miles from Wisconsin to Peru. Within Peru, I've traveled an estimated 1,900 miles on round trips to Lima, a handful of trips to the jungle, and into town.
The most common way to travel from Lima is on these massive double-decker buses that leave periodically from town. When traveling into town I usually take a shared taxi with two or three other people. And within my site, although it takes 15 minutes to walk from one end to the other, sometimes I’ll take a mototaxi when I’m running late for school.
