The most interesting place I traveled to this week was San Ramon, which is a beautiful town in the jungle about an hour and a half away from my site. We had a big group meetup of volunteers in the region and drank the best coffee, ate ceviche with fresh fish from the river, tried fruit we had never seen before and took advantage of the gorgeous weather by swimming in the pool.
The day I’m writing this article marks the first day of holy week leading up to Easter, which is a hugely important event for Peruvian Catholics and Evangelicals. It just so happens that the hub for this celebration in Peru is in the neighboring town, a short taxi ride away from my site. I’m told that thousands of Peruvians will travel here from all over the country, and Christians from all over the world arrive to take part in this religious celebration. There will be daily mass, out-of-control parties, processions in the plazas and colorful carpets made out of flowers displayed on the street. It should be a unique cultural experience and I’m excited to learn more about the traditions!
