As the rainy season comes to a close, I was delighted this week to experience a full week of sunshine. Although we’re technically entering winter here in South America, the sunny days are much warmer than the dreary rainfall we’ve had over the past few months. I’ve been soaking it all in sitting up on my roof, admiring how the strong sun rays illuminate the vibrant green landscape left behind by months of bountiful rain.
This week, I saw donkeys, mules, horses, a chanchito (little pig) and a llama decked out in traditional Peruvian drip. One of my favorite pastimes is to clamber up a mountain nearby my house and listen to the birds. While there are countless bird species in the area, the region I live in is famous for its abundance of picaflores (hummingbirds).
