Morgan's First Fufu

Introduction:

Hello, Ms. Valtierra and Ms. Vetrano's class! I hope you are doing well.

What do you like to eat? Do you like trying new foods? I certainly do! When you move to a new country, you must be open-minded to its cuisines. So, every week, I try to eat something new, here in Ghana. This weekend, I ate fufu for the first time with two friends names Emmanuel and Prince. What is fufu, you may ask? Read on to find out!

What food did I try?:

Fufu is a West African dish made of pounded cassava, yams or plantains. It is the white, circular dough you can see in our featured image. I ate the fufu with goat meat and what Ghanaians call light stew. Light stew is made of ginger, peppers, tomatoes and other ingredients.

You can eat fufu with your hands or with a spoon. When eating with your hands, you tear off pieces of fufu and use them to scoop up the stew and meat. To clean their hands, Ghanaians keep soap and a bowl of water on the table for washing.

How did I feel when I tried it?:

I felt very happy when I tried fufu for the first time. A few months ago, I tried tuo zaafi. (Pronounced "two-oh zah-fi."). Tuo zaafi is a Northern Ghanaian dish that you also eat with your hands. So, I was comfortable with using my fingers.
