I got to interview one of my host cousins, Valentina. She was one of my first friends here in town and also happens to be one of my students. In this interview, she talks about the parts of her life that she’d like to share with other students. Valentina is nine years old and has one older sister who is also a great friend of mine. I hope you enjoy reading about life from her perspective here in Peru!
Breakfast is called desayuno. Normally we will have a soup such as sopa de polla: which is soup with chicken, pasta and potatoes. Sometimes we will have pan con tortilla. Pan is bread and tortilla is an egg fritter with lettuce, tomato and flour. We usually have breakfast with some sort of fruit juice. My favorite is jugo de fresa (to make it we blend milk, strawberries and a spoonful of sugar)
Lunch is called almuerzo and it is our best meal of the day. A typical lunch is chicken with some sort of rice or potato or vegetable. Today we had chicken with a salad. Our salads have red onion, tomato, lettuce, and cucumber. We also make our dressing at home with lime juice, mustard, an egg, oil, and some spices. Another typical lunch is Aji de Gallina.
