A Peek into Life in Peru: the Perspective of my 9-Year Old Host Cousin

This is shredded chicken with a yellow sauce that is made of saltine crackers, milk, and a yellow pepper in the blender, etc. It is always served with potatoes and rice and a hard-boiled egg. My mom makes the best Aji de Gallina. We usually have it with orange juice (we squeeze oranges and add some water and sugar to make it).

Lastly, dinner here is called cena. This is usually something very small. We usually drink some sort of tea, such as Manzanilla (chamomile tea). And we will have bread from my aunt’s bread bakery. I like to eat tuna with my bread.

What is your house like?:

My house is big with 9 rooms. The house is made of adobe (bricks made of straw and mud). Some of the rooms have cement ceilings, others have ceilings of wood. The roof is made of wood and tiles. There are three floors, one of them is outside where we have plants and animals. There is a patio in the center of the house which is also outside and connects different parts of the house. Outside on the bottom floor we have our little farm area with plants like nísperos, chalarina, lime and lemon trees, and alfalfa for the guinea pigs (cuys).

What chores do you have at home?:

Some of my chores include cleaning my room, making my bed, feeding my dog and the ducks, and sweeping the kitchen. I also help run the store that we have in the front of the house. When people come to order things, I help get what they need, collect their payments, and when we get shipments in, I help put everything where it belongs. Lastly, sometimes I cook for myself when my mom is busy. I know how to make fried eggs.
