Cannoli Siciliani

Introduction:

When I found out I was going to be traveling to Sicily for a week, I was so excited for many reasons. One of these reasons was I knew I would get the opportunity to try an authentic Sicilian cannolo from the city where they were first made. You might have heard of the term "cannoli" but this refers to more than one cannolo. 

What food did I try?:

I tried an authentic Sicilian cannolo. It's a dessert that has become quite famous elsewhere in the world. You can probably find some cannoli not too far from where you live! We went to one of the churches near the center of the city because the nuns of that church prepare lots of baked goods for volunteers to then sell. 

How did I feel when I tried it?:

it was delicious! They were also much much larger than I expected! The word "cannolo" comes from an Italian word meaning "little tube", referring to the fried shell that holds the delicious creamy filling. Yum!

How is the food prepared?:

Cannoli are filled with a ricotta-based cream and then drizzled with toppings such as chocolate chips and pistachio nuts. Ricotta is a type of cheese that is very light and can be a little tart. It might sound kind of weird to fill a dessert with cheese, but ricotta is very light and creamy.
