The main language spoken in Bergen is Norwegian, but most Norwegians can also speak English fluently. Norwegian is very similar to Swedish and Danish, and it even shares a few similarities with English. For example, “Hello” in Norwegian is “Hallo,” and “Hi” is “Hei.”

The currency in Norway is the Norwegian krone. One krone equals $0.11, so the prices in Norway look very high relative to the American dollar. For example, a 200-krone meal is really equal to $22.

How much does a bottle of water cost?:

The cost of a bottle of water in Norway is about 20 krones, or $2.20. Of all of the countries I have visited, Norway is by far the most expensive!

What was the best meal this week?:

Norway is known for its fish and open-faced sandwiches, and the most interesting meal I tried this week was a sandwich filled with mini shrimp, called räksmörgås.I also enjoyed a few Norwegian pastries, including a slice of almond cake, a hazelnut ball and a bite of fluffy apple cake.

What music did I listen to this week?:

Norway is home to a wide variety of music and is especially famous for black metal. Interestingly enough, folk bands are beginning to combine their folk style with metal, and this new type of music is becoming more and more popular.
