Matto Grosso do Sul is a beautiful state here in Brazil, full of nature and wildlife. When I first arrived two months ago, I had no idea the kind of natural beauty I would encounter on a daily basis. This is a state rich in natural diversity, and every day brings a new surprise. I’ve gone into the Pantanal to visit the region’s wetlands, been delightfully surprised by the abundance of capybaras I find here, and am always keeping my eye out for the elusive jaguar and the stunning macaw. Brazil is a massive, beautiful country. I am thrilled to learn more and more about this country every day here.
Of course, my students, colleagues, and friends here make all the difference in this experience. Exchange opportunities like the Fulbright Program allow everyday people like me to meet people from all over the world and experience varying cultures, languages, and ways of life. I am honored to share my own perspective in the process. Most importantly, exchange programs allow us to share ideas and learn about our varying backgrounds and experiences as our communities abroad and back home learn from our exchange experiences. The Fulbright program also provides vital language learning opportunities– for my students as I teach English, and for travelers like me as I continue to learn Portuguese.
