How Food Connects us to Culture

Introduction:

¡Hola! Hi everyone :) I am so excited to share my adventures in Spain with you. Today, I’m going to start by talking about the food here. Like other countries, food is an important part of Spain’s culture. Not only are the foods here unique, but so is the culture around how these foods are shared, including where these foods come from. Let’s dig in!

What food did I try?:

Let’s start with breakfast. Here you can stop at any local cafe and grab a Zumo de Naranja (fresh squeezed orange juice!) or a Cafe con Leche (coffee with milk). Your drink also comes with a plate of sweets like churros, cake or a croissant. If you’re really hungry, you would also get a pincho (a slice) of tortilla de patatas. Tortilla de patatas is what I have eaten the most here. It is eggs with potatoes and, sometimes, onion. It's cooked into a big round shape that almost looks like a cake before you slice into it. It’s not super flavorful, but it’s warm, a little gooey and very filling.

How did I feel when I tried it?:

Another food I tried was a popular treat called castañas asadas, which means roasted chestnuts! This is especially popular right now because on November 1st, for All Saints Day, it is tradition to eat these chestnuts and remember your loved ones who have passed away.
