An Interview with Fifth Graders in Lesotho: Teboho, Karabelo and Boithatelo

How do you get to school? Are you allowed to go to school by yourself?:

All: We walk with our feet!

Teboho: I walk with my friends. I think it takes me ten minutes to walk to school.

Boithatelo: I think it also takes me only ten minutes because I run to school!

Karabelo: Sometimes I walk with my friends, and sometimes I walk alone.

Where do you eat lunch? What is your favorite food?:

Teboho: My favorite food is KFC. I eat chicken legs.

Karabelo: I like rice and cupcakes!

Boithatelo: My favorite food is noodles and Hungry Lion.

All: At school, we eat peas, papa, cabbage, eggs and samp.

Boithatelo: At school, we eat lunch outside, but if there is too much rain, we eat in the classroom.

Note: Hungry Lion is a fried chicken fast food chain from South Africa, similar to KFC. Papa is a thick, porridge-like side dish made from cornmeal. People usually eat it with meat and cooked vegetables. Samp is dried corn that has been crushed into small pieces and cooked in water until it is soft. In Lesotho, people often eat it with beans.

What language do you speak at school? How do you say "Hello" in your language?:

Teboho: The language we speak at school is English.

Boithatelo: We also speak Sesotho at school and at home.

All: We like to speak English!

Boithatelo: Hello in Sesotho is just ho joang.

What are some common kids' names at your school?:

Boithatelo: Teacher, there are so many! Manqobane, Nthati and Mosa. There are so many.
