Lesotho’s Mountains, People and Environment

Introduction:

You’ve already learned a bit about Lesotho, but today we’re going on a mini adventure! Imagine walking up tall mountains, crossing sparkling rivers and seeing green fields as far as you can see. It’s beautiful, but living here isn’t always easy. The land can wash away, water can be hard to find and farmers have to work really hard to take care of their crops. Luckily, the Basotho people are clever and hardworking—they’ve found smart ways to protect their mountains, farms and rivers. Let’s explore how they do it!

What makes this environment special or different?:

The most special part about Lesotho's environment is definitely the mountains. As you learned last week, Lesotho is the highest country in the entire world! Because Lesotho is so high, summers are not as hot as other countries in Africa. During the winter, we even get snow! Lesotho is in the Southern Hemisphere which means that our seasons are the opposite of seasons in the US. Summer happens in November through January, and winter happens from June through August. While you are having picnics and barbecues during summer break, I will be bundled up in my house in Lesotho with beautiful white snow outside. There are two distinct parts of Lesotho: the lowlands and the highlands.
