Karneval: The Most Fun Tradition

Traditional foods such as Berliner donuts and Reibekuchen, or potato pancakes, are also part of the celebration.

Why does the community have this tradition?:

Karneval began as a celebration before the Christian season of Lent, a time of reflection. Over time, it became a community tradition that allows people to enjoy music, laughter and time together during the winter. Parades often use humor to comment on current events in a respectful way. Each city celebrates Karneval differently, and in Bonn and Cologne, the traditional red and white colors show local pride.

Is this tradition connected to its environment? How?:

Karneval is closely connected to the Rhineland’s environment and culture. Cities like Bonn and Cologne are located along the Rhine River, which helped share traditions across the region. Parades travel through historic streets and town centers, turning everyday spaces into places of celebration. Because Karneval happens in winter, it helps bring energy and excitement to the community during the colder months.
